I have always loved Acting.
From making a great scene to draw my parents’ attention in my early years, through the vivid representation of a Shakespearean tragedy in my first teenage breakups, to be possessed by the spirit of Chaplin or Keaton to make my 3 year old son smile.
Acting and especially Drama have always been an important part of my life.
Although I was always a voracious and applied spectator in all the cultural offerings of my city, it was only a few years ago when I decided to investigate, study and put the body into this fascinating world. Nearly 230 theatres and 200 “salas” are counted in Buenos Aires.
I’m able to say that I’ve been to all kinds of theatres in Buenos Aires from the most bizarre to the most pompous. Buenos Aires Drama scene is somehow divided into “circuits”. These are some of them, and their most representative exponents:
The Official circuit is made up of theatres of prestigious history and great influence in the local culture. They depend on the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. Their repertoires go from classical music, opera and ballet, to classics of universal theatre.
Some of them are Teatro Nacional Cervantes, Teatro General San Martin, TeatroPresidente Alvear, TeatroSarmiento and the world-class Teatro Colon, often referred to in the same breath as London’s Royal Opera House and Milan’ La Scala.
The Commercial circuit or Mainstream has most of its exponents in the iconic Avenida Corrientes and its surroundings. These theatres exhibit mostly comedies, dramas, musicals, stand up, Revue, theatre for children, etc. The most representative are Multiteatro, Gran Rex, Lola Membrives, Metropolitan Citi, TeatroMaipo, Opera, Astral, La Plaza, among others.
The Independent circuit has grown considerably in in the past years. Mostly performed in small scale theatres, old houses studies, clubs, factories, and even in the streets, this self-managed low budget projects seem to gain more public every year.
Some say it was at the early 30’s (with Leonidas Barletta and the iconic Teatrodel Pueblo) when the first mythical independent theatres developed their activity as an alternative to the scene, both official and, above all, commercial.
Through the years, especially in the 60’s, topics ranged from experimental, avant-garde, to “social realism” and “new grotesque”.
Nowadays we may find a huge variety of topics (classic, comedy, drama, musical, tragedy, etc). And other forgotten genres, such as the absurd, the grotesque, etc.
Their most representative exponents are Timbre 4, Abasto Social Club, Beckett Teatro, El Kafka, EspacioCallejon, El Brio, and many more.
Everyday more and more guests inquire about Buenos Aires’ local independent Drama scene. And that usually puts a big smile on my face.

I guess I was always into hospitality. As soon as I finished secondary school I made my way into Hotel industry to study Hotel Management at Perito Moreno Institute of Buenos Aires. Shortly after graduating I worked in some of Buenos Aires´ finest (and not so) hotels, covering different positions, from bellman to Front Desk attendant. In 1997 I started working at The Brick Hotel Buenos Aires (named Caesar Park BA at that time) as Doorman. The shortest in town! In 2001 I was promoted as a Concierge, and a few years later as Chief Concierge. It was in 2005 when I´ve been introduced to Les Clefs d´Or by one of my mentors. But it was not before 2007 that I was able to attend to my first Congress (Ixtapa National Mexican Congress). Argentina depended on Mexico at that time. It took me a few months to recover from that amazing experience. Then in 2008 I made my way to my first international Congress in Copenhagen and that was it. Les Clefs d´Or enchanted me! After that I had the privilege to attend to several Les Clefs d´Or Pan American and International Congresses (Hangzhou, Toronto, London, Montreal, and Mendoza). Last year I was honored to be elected as Vice President of Les Clefs d´Or Argentina. Honor that continues today.
